Resources for switching to DaVinci Resolve

I recently wrote up a deep-dive on switching from Adobe Premiere to DaVinci Resolve. If you're thinking about switching, or if you're just curious on how Resolve works, here's a list of resources that helped me make the jump:

General Resources

  • DaVinci Resolve Training | Blackmagic Design: Tutorials straight from Blackmagic Design. Some of them are dated and use version 17 (at time of writing, version 20 is current), but I found that the content was still helpful and the interface was consistent enough for me to follow along.
  • DaVinci Resolve 20 Reference Manual (PDF): A whopper 4000+ page document that you can search and peruse while editing. Great for quick instruction and reference.

Cutting and Editing

  • DaVinci Resolve 17 Edit Training - Multicam Editing | Blackmagic Design: This tutorial got me started with multicam editing and also covered some of the basic functions in DaVinci Resolve at the same time.
  • VERTICAL VIDEO in DaVinci Resolve | Chris Roberts Video Production & Training — Super helpful overview on how to use the Cut page to quickly edit horizontal 16:9 video into a vertical 9:16 cut for social media. This video taught me how to use Dynamic Zoom, which is an incredible feature that allows you to add Ken Burns-style pans and zooms to video with ease.

Color Correction and Color Grading

  • How to Grade SLog Footage | Cullen Kelly: Eye opening introduction from to node-based editing from a professional colorist. Kelly demonstrates what Resolve can really do to help you sculpt an image. I was always under the impression that it was better to underexpose digital images than over expose them, but Kelly illustrates otherwise.
  • How to Color Grade in DaVinci Resolve for Beginners!| Think Media: Between the Kelly video on SLog footage and this one, you can learn enough about node-based color correction and grading to build out a workflow that works for you.
  • DaVinci Resolve Multicam Color Grading: three methods | Jason Roberts Video: If you're color grading a multicam sequence, this is a must watch. Robers (who has another channel called DaVinci Dojo) illustrates different methods for color grading multicam sequences and explains why you might choose each one. This is great to watch before you get too deep into the editing.
  • A New Approach to Grading Color in DaVinci Resolve | Cullen Kelly on Frame.io Insider: This blog post is a bit technical, but it helped me see how much you can push an image with DaVinci Resolve. It also illustrated how you can set up node graphs differently depending on what you're trying to achieve. I ultimately used a very simple five-node graph that was a bit of a hybrid of what Cullen describes in this article and the Think Media video.

Sound Editing in Fairlight

  • Audio Editing in DaVinci Resolve - A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners | Music Radio Creative: I watched a ton of videos from Mike Russell on audio editing when I worked more in Adobe Audition, and he was a natural pick for advice on editing sound in Resolve. This video provides a good into where things are located and how you can quickly EQ audio in Resolve. If you already have some background in audio editing, this will get you up to speed in a new space.

Motion Graphics in Fusion

  • STOP Being Scared of Nodes in Fusion! DaVinci Resolve 20 | Thom Lyons | Visual+Aid Productions: Super straightforward and logical walkthrough of how nodes work in the Fusion page. Lyons explains all the fundamentals in an easy-to-grasp manner—I appreciate no-hype tutorials that are to-the-point. I followed along and was able to create some simple graphics, which is the point of the video. If, like me, you've never created motion graphics from scratch, this video is a great intro into what you can achieve in Resolve.

Along the way, I also dipped into the Resolve forum, watched other YouTube videos, and read a ton online. The links above are the most impactful ones I encountered, and I hope they help you in your journey as well.
